Want to Get Rid of those Scars?

RF microneedling can help

It wasn’t that long ago when a scar was for life. “Permanently scarred” became an expression to describe the aftermath of a traumatic experience, drawing a direct analogy to the permanence of a physical scar on the body.

No more.

There’s a powerful medical technology that can significantly diminish the appearance and size of a scar.

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is used as a successful treatment for scars. The procedure involves creating micro-punctures in the skin, which helps break down scar tissue and stimulate growth of new collagen and elastin – the proteins that give skin a smooth, supple appearance. Microneedling also helps the production of melanin within your skin. Melanin is the pigment that creates your skin tone. By increasing melanin around a scar, the old wounded skin begins to blend in with your natural skin tone, so the scar is less visible.

RF Microneedling produces superior results due to the ultra-fine needles and vacuum suction technology. Fine adjustments can be made to ensure that RF energy is delivered to precisely the correct depth of your skin.

Why do scars form on my body?

Scars develop when the deeper layers of your skin are damaged. Your body forms new collagen fibers as a wound begins to heal, but the new collagen is a different protein composition than collagen in healthy skin. When you are injured, the body focuses on repairing and healing the wound. A scar is the result of this natural process.

How can RF Microneedling help?

Microneedling is rapidly becoming a “go-to” treatment for scars. The procedure is suitable for treating virtually all scars on the face and body, including:

  • Surgery scars
  • Scars from injury and self-harm
  • Acne scars
  • Raised white scars (hypertrophic scars)
  • Sunken scars
  • And even stretch marks

Does RF Microneedling hurt?

Treatments are virtually pain-free, although some patients may experience some discomfort which can be addressed with a topical numbing cream.

The surface of your skin over the treatment area will be cleaned and prepped.

At Walk-in Dermatology, we use state-of-the-art equipment, including the Morpheus8 manufactured by InMode. This is widely considered to be the gold standard in RF Microneedling therapy equipment.

You’ll feel light pressure on your skin as the microneedles create tiny channels to trigger new collagen production. Radiofrequency is also delivered into the dermis layer, causing a warm sensation over the treatment area.

What’s next and how many treatments will I need?

Right after an RF Microneedling treatment your skin may appear red and feel warm, like a mild sunburn. Treated scars will remain red for a few days while your skin is in recovery. Your dermatologist or aesthetician will provide all necessary aftercare advice, which essentially involves taking care of the treated area as if it was a minor wound.

A typical course of treatment involves 3 to 5 RF Microneedling sessions, each spaced between three weeks to a month apart. Since every patient is different, you may require fewer or more treatments to achieve the results you desire.

You’ll notice significant results after the conclusion of treatment, typically 3 to 6 months after your final Microneedling treatment. It takes time for the skin to produce new, healthy collagen, elastin and melanin.

As for the treatment itself, with RF Microneedling there’s no downtime. You can resume normal activities immediately, taking care not to touch the treated area. For instance, contact sports would not be advised. Applying lotions to the treated area or sunbathing also would not be recommended.

Can I expect lasting results?

Yes, especially when treated with the Morpheus8, which has proven to be highly effective in erasing visible signs of scarring. Most scars will not require any additional treatment once your RF Microneedling course of therapy is complete. The main exception is whether further skin damage occurs. Stretch marks, for instance, may require microneedling maintenance treatments.
